What we make: a free freelance rate calculator and practical guides to pricing work, planning business costs, and understanding a tax reserve assumption.
Who operates it: BERNASHI LTD, a UK company. The calculator and guides focus on US freelancers and independent contractors.
A starting point for a real quote
A salary goal alone does not tell you what to charge. You also need to allow for business expenses and the time spent on admin, sales, holidays, and other work you cannot bill. Our calculator works backward from your desired take-home income using assumptions you choose.
It produces a minimum hourly rate, an eight-hour day rate, and an average monthly revenue target. These are planning figures rather than a survey of market prices or a promise that clients will book your time.
Transparent arithmetic, visible assumptions
We show the calculation method and worked examples publicly. With $60,000.00 in annual take-home income, $500.00 in monthly expenses, an illustrative 25% effective tax rate, 46 billable weeks, and 25 billable hours per week, with no extra profit buffer, the model requires $86,000.00 in annual revenue. Dividing that by 1,150 billable hours gives $74.78 per hour.
The tax rate is entered by the user. We do not determine an exact federal or state tax bill, calculate tax brackets or credits, or replace a tax professional. Automated checks cover the model’s arithmetic and software behavior; they do not establish the accuracy of anyone’s personal tax assumptions.
Guides that put the method to work
Our freelance finance guides extend the calculation into common pricing decisions, including turning a salary goal into a freelance rate, building a per-word writing rate, and budgeting for QA and maintenance.
Guides use AI-assisted drafting, stated assumptions, and links to relevant primary sources. Read the editorial policy for our approach to examples, sourcing, limitations, and corrections. Our organization byline identifies the publisher and does not imply a named financial professional has reviewed an article.
How the product is funded
The calculator results and guides are free to use. The optional US$9 pricing kit includes a personalized PDF, an editable Excel workbook, a PowerPoint summary, and a draft invoice PDF. This is a one-time purchase, with any applicable tax shown at checkout. There is no required calculator account.
